It’s that time of year again when all day care and pre-k programs MUST complete their immunization survey data report online by March 5, 2017.
If you have some years of experience under your belt working in day care, Head Start or UPK, the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Immunization Survey is nothing new. However, there have been some regulation updates to the 2017 immunization survey that you need to be aware of when completing your survey.
School immunization rules and regulations have been changed so that New York State immunization requirements are consistent with the most current childhood and adolescent immunization recommendations made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).- Updated School Immunization Requirements, Public Health Law Section 2164, Rules and Regulations Subpart 66-1 (Effective September 1, 2016)
Why, When and What…
Why the change?
As per the NYSDOH website, the NYSDOH made these changes to conform to recent changes to Public Health Law Section 2164 which require meningococcal vaccine for students in 7th and 12th grades and to ensure that children entering pre-kindergarten are fully vaccinated against polio. The regulations were also updated to incorporate the current Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Recommended Schedules and to update the regulations for the New York State Immunization Information System (NYSIIS).
When do these change go into effect?
The changes went into effect at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year on September 1, 2016. This means that when you are reviewing the child immunization record, it is important that you are compare the number of doses per vaccine the child is required to have based on his/her age with the must current NYS Immunization Schedule.
What changes have been made to the school immunization regulations?
Several changes have been made to the school immunization requirements for the 2016- 17 school year. The changes that affect children entering daycare, head start and UPK are related to the ACIP minimum interval immunization against Polio.
All other vaccine requirements established for the 2015-16 school year remain in effect. See below the “New York State Immunization Requirements for School Entrance/Attendance” for the 2016-17 school year for further detail.
